Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis Treatment
or NSF Treatment

Steriod Treatment for Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF)

While there is not a cure for Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF), there are some available treatment options for Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF). The most common treatment used by Doctors and Medical Centers is to help the patient alleviate the symptoms and pains of the Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF). This involves the use of steroids and other anti-inflammatory medicines. Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) treatment with steroids has also been shown to improve renal function in patients with kidney disease.

Other Treatment Options for Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) Patients

Doctors have also used a topical cream medication as another treatment option for Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) Patients. The topical cream medication is called is DOVONEX (calcipotriene ointment). Dovonex (also known by its generic name calcipotriene) is a form of synthetic vitamin D3 approved by the FDA for treating psoriasis. It slows down the rate of skin cell growth, flattens psoriasis lesions and removes scale. It is not effective at decreasing inflammation, though for most patients redness will improve over time. Additionally, other treatments options recommended to some patients with Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) include deep massages to loosen muscle tightening pains, along with physical therapy, swimming, stretching and other low impact exercise activities.

Treatment of NSF Symptoms

One of the reasons there are few treatment options for NSF is the youth of the disease itself. Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) is an extremely rare condition that occurs in some individuals enduring an advanced stage of kidney disease. Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) is also known as Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD). The first cases of the condition were documented in 1997. Since then, less that 300 cases have been confirmed worldwide. Researchers are unsure what causes the condition, but recent studies have indicated that a connection exists between NSF/NFD and solutions commonly used in MRI procedures that contain Gadolinium. To date, the US Food and Drug Administration has received over 100 reports of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF), or Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD), cases linked to the injection of a Gadolinium based contrast agents.

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) is a skin disorder characterized by the skin located on the extremities becoming tight and stiff to the point of extreme discomfort. The skin of a patient with Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) begins to resemble an orange peel and the soft tissue beneath the affected areas begins to harden. Patients with Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) have reported that they feel a burning sensation in the skin, itching and may experience sharp pains within the tissue underneath the affected areas (hot spots). This dermal pain usually develops over a period of months, but can develop within a matter of days. Current NSF Treatment options will not cure the disease, but treatemnt of the symptoms will help those diagnosed with Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) to live with it.

Future Treatment Options for NSF

Due to the nature of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF), the treatment options are limited. The medical community and major medical, pharmaceutical and drug companies are working on better and more effective treatment of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF). As the medical community becomes more familiar with the symptoms of NSF and NFD, the number of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) patients will grow. Drug companies will become aware of these increasing numbers and should help to find a cure for Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) and the devastating pains associated with NSF Symptoms.
