NSF Punch Biopsy Skin Test

Skin Test for Gadolinium Exposure

One common test for NSF or NFD used by dermatologist is a punch biopsy. A punch biopsy is also called a shave biopsy or skin biopsy. A punch biopsy is a sampling of the dermal tissue. Punch biopsies are most often used for deeper skin lesions. A small cylinder of skin (usually the size of a pencil eraser) is removed with a sharp, hollow instrument. If a large sample is taken, the area may be closed with stitches. There are several methods for performing skin biopsies. A punch biopsy test for NSF or gadolinium is the preferred test.

Most NSF test biopsy type procedures can be easily completed in outpatient medical offices. Choice of techniques is determined by several factors, including the location, size, and type of lesion to be biopsied. All methods usually include a local injection or topical application of an anesthetic. A physician testing with a punch biopsy for NSF will state the risks, benefits, and alternatives before giving consent to any procedure. A punch biopsy for NSF will help identify the presence of gadolinium in your tissue and dermis. Of course as the Doctor will explain, any time the skin barrier is broken, there is a chance of infection or even a scar and the potential loss of blood is usually a very small amount of blood during the procedure.

Many of our clients have asked their personal doctors to be tested for NSF and many of their Doctors are reluctant to perform skin biopsy for NSF and in fact many of them are being referred to local dermatologist for NSF testing. Due to the newness of NSF, many doctors and testing labs are not familiar with the NSF testing protocol that may be required to properly diagnose NSF. If you are having difficulties being tested for NSF, then call and talk to us and we may be able to give you some information that may be helpful to you or your doctor. Call us at 1-800-883-9858.
